Volcano Run with the Hula Riders
|
||||
|
A small but dedicated group left from Hilo
Harley-Davidson that spring morning. Much confusion was generated by a
conflict between the start time listed in the website and that listed in
the newspaper. But eventually, five of us rolled out of the parking lot
and ma uka on the Volcano Highway. Start time? Start place? Who knows?
Even for a "Riding Group," VS a "Motorcycle Club" we
are pretty laid back. We didn't even break out the cameras until we were halfway done!

The indomitable Dr Jo - She's also a road captain for Hawai`i
Motorcycle Tours.
|

Our first stop was the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Jaeger Museum and Kilauea Cauldera Overlook

|
|

After that we headed to Kilauea Cauldera, itself, to make our ho`okupu - traditional offering of respect.

Heading down to the shore where lava was flowing into the sea, we rounded a bend and were greeted with the sight of steam billowing from the ocean, but traffic prevented us from crossing the road to stop at the scenic overlook. |
|||||
Reaching the coast, we hunted for good bike parking. Unfortunately, we rode up BEHIND the sign that said, "No Parking." It's the one Brett to Bret's left.Oops. |
|||||
Sigh. The gravel strip was not nearly as nice as the no-parking zone. But
we were allowed to put the markers out to protect the bikes.

Once there, we watched sea birds dip and soar as the ocean rose and
fell under the graceful curve of a new-formed sea arch.

Heading back ma uka, we stopped at the scenic overlook, and were
rewarded with spectacular clouds of steam puffing up from the water's
edge.
