Combining
paniola tradition with motorcycling -
Leilehua models the palaka bandana and hair braider.
|
Bandanas in Palaka - Palaka is a fabric which became
traditional in Hawai`i for use on the plantations and
ranches. Each
plantation had its own color. Durable, yet comfortable,
palaka is enjoying a resurgance in popularity. These are 100%
cotton, made in Hawai`i, and machine hemmed. Shown, 26"
blue bandana.
Hair Braiders in Palaka and Yarn
- Leilehua learned to make these hair braiders when
traveling in Fiji. The Indian women there use them as
decorative hair ornaments. Leilehua's version combines
practicality with beauty. The braiders protect by wrapping
the hair and taking up the stress of the wind. Palaka
braiders are cotton. Yarn braiders are acrylic.

Leilehua goes
partiotic. OK, so it's a bit sloppy. It was a lot easier to
do Dee's hair after one beer than my own after three!

Leilehua starts here
with a french braid and places the braider at the nape of the
neck to incorporate it. The fabric can be mingled with the
hair, as shown here, or wrapped around the hair to protect it
even more securely.

OK,
so we ain't got on no makeup, and we're in our ridin'
clothes 'stead of all gussied up. It was a GREAT party, and
we had a lot of fun suckin' down beers from our Hawaiian
microbreweries, and listening to the band, Blue Tiger while
sitting in my back yard. Braddah Richard shot the photos for
us so at least we have SOME now, even if they ain't the most
PERFESHUNUL in the wurld!

Here,
Leilehua is putting a braider into Dee's hair. She begins
the braider midway up the scalp for a different decorative
effect.
