PHOTO: The Secret to Coqui Frog ControlHere is a collection of sites to help people reduce the negative impacts of the invasive and incredibly annoying coqui frog.

They are tiny but their annoying sound is extremely large. The call of the coqui frog, especially a coqui choir, can drive you crazy. The frogs — as small as a quarter yet loud as a smoke alarm — compete with native birds for insects.

"When there are a lot of them it's just like a din. It's just like like an EEEEE!" said Mark Munekata, a Big Island resident. Males are territorial, to approximately three to five square feet, but their call can travel a quarter mile or more.

It's so bad there that real estate contracts now contain a mandatory coqui disclosure.  Realtors say it's harder to sell a home with coqui in the neighborhood.  They are just about everywhere.

How to Make Coqui Traps

Also:

You can build the traps out of old 1" to 2" pvc pipe (must be old and weathered)... you need three lengths of pipe, one about 8 inches long and the other two about 2 inches long and a tee fitting ... place the small pieces of pipe into the horizontal fitting in the tee, then place the large piece of pipe into the vertical connection and place tape on the opening at the bottom of the 8" pipe ... leave the 2" pieces open ... now place the tee about 3' off the ground in trees where you hear the frogs ... the females will go into the pipe and they often will lay eggs there ... check the trap every few days and dispose of the coquis as you see fit. Be sure they are dead before disposal so survivors do not infest the disposal site.
