About the Song

G         Em     G
Driving, driving, driving

  C            Am  D7
Down that Saddle Road,

  D7       Am                   D7   G
Wishing you would meet me at the end.

G         Em     G
Driving, driving, driving

  C            Am  D7
Down that Saddle Road,

  D7       Am                   D7   G
Wishing you could greet me at the end.

G                         Em
Southern Cross is hanging low

 G
Above the road ahead.

G                        Em            D7
Stars spread out across an open sky.

D7                Am
The tires on my old four-by hug

  D7        Am D7
Each and every bend

  D7         Am             D7              G
The way I wish that I was hugging you tonight.

G                   Em     G
And I’m driving, driving, driving

C            Am      D7
Down that Saddle Road,

  D7       Am               D7   G
Wishing you would meet me at the end.

G        Em     G
Driving, driving, driving

  C            Am    D7
Down that lonesome road,

  D7       Am                   D7   G
Wishing you could greet me at the end.

Another constellation now
Guides me on my way.
I wonder if it’s hanging over you.
So many words I never took the time
Nor dared to say,
I sing them to the stars to send to you.

Driving, driving, driving,
Down that Saddle Road
Wishing you would meet me at the end.
And I’m driving, driving, driving
Down that lonesome road
Wishing you could greet me at the end.

Driving, driving, driving
Down that Saddle Road,
Wishing you would meet me at the end.
And I'm driving, driving, driving
Down that lonesome road,
Wishing you could greet me at the end.
Wishing you could meet me at the end.

I wrote this song back when I was commuting some 100 miles each way between Hilo and Kona. My daughter would go to sleep in the passenger seat of my old Jeep Cherokee (one of the best all-around 4-WD vehicles ever made) as I swung the car around the twists and turns of the old Saddle Road.

They are taking out a lot of the bends that I sang about. I do hope it makes the road safer, instead of faster and more deadly. But in any case, I will always have the memory of rounding each bend, and watching one star-field after another come into view.

The song really wrote itself during those drives. The bass hum of the tires, the counter melody of the engine, the soprano of the wind, and above all, the sharply inaudible crystalline singing of the stars guiding me on my way.

This song is also my first professional recording. It is on Songs from Hawai`i Island, produced by Keoki Kahumoku, Daniel Ho, and the Hawai`i Island Visitors Bureau.
